What is 3D Secure authentication?
Overview
Section titled “Overview”3D Secure authentication is a service that helps reduce the risk of unauthorized use and make online card transactions more secure.
In addition to the information printed on the card, authentication may use a password that only the cardholder can check, or biometric authentication such as fingerprint or face authentication.
What password should I enter?
Section titled “What password should I enter?”The password used for authentication differs by card issuer. Follow the instructions shown on the screen.
ℹ️ Examples of passwords used for 3D Secure authentication:
- A password registered in advance
- A one-time password shown in the card issuer’s app
- A one-time password sent by SMS to your phone number
Is there a fee to register?
Section titled “Is there a fee to register?”Registration for 3D Secure authentication is free.
Is my card supported?
Section titled “Is my card supported?”Contact your card issuer to check whether your card supports 3D Secure authentication.
The authentication screen does not say “3D Secure”

- Visa - Visa Secure
- Mastercard - Mastercard ID Check
- JCB - J/Secure
- Amex - American Express SafeKey
- DISCOVER - ProtectBuy
- Diners Club - ProtectBuy
- UnionPay - UnionPay 3-D Secure
The password entry screen did not appear
Section titled “The password entry screen did not appear”You may be asked to enter a password when the risk of unauthorized use is judged to be high, such as when accessing from an unusual environment. Contact your card issuer for details.
